Fermi LAT Measurements of the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission at Intermediate Galactic Latitudes

چکیده
The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission is produced by cosmic rays (CRs) interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation field. Measurements by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) indicated excess γ-ray emission ≥ 1 GeV relative to diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission models consistent with directly measured CR spectra (the so-called “EGRET GeV excess”). The excess emission was observed in all directions on the sky, and a variety of explanations have been proposed, including beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios like annihilating or decaying dark matter. The Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has measured the diffuse γ-ray emission with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution. We report on LAT measurements of the diffuse γ-ray emission for energies 100 MeV to 10 GeV and Galactic latitudes 10◦ ≤ |b| ≤ 20. The LAT spectrum for this region of the sky is well reproduced by the diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission models mentioned above and inconsistent with the EGRET GeV excess.

Small Molecular Clouds at High Latitudes as Gamma-Ray Sources for GLAST
The sensitivity of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the forthcoming GLAST mission will be so much greater than previous high-energy γ-ray missions that small molecular clouds at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 10) will be detected in the light of diffuse γ-ray emission from cosmic-ray interactions. These clouds are small, typically subtending less than 1 with masses ∼10–100 sol...

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope with its main instrument on-board, the Large Area Telescope (LAT), opened a new era in the study of high-energy emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). When combined with contemporaneous groundand space-based observations, Fermi-LAT achieves its full capability to characterize the jet structure and the emission mechanisms at work in radio-loud AGN with di...
متن کاملFermi LAT Measurements of the Gamma-Ray Emission from the Large Magellanic Cloud
Apart from the Milky Way, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the only other normal star-forming galaxy that was conclusively detected in high energy (> 100 MeV) γ-rays by the Energetic Gamma Ray Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. However, the sensitivity of EGRET was sufficient only to marginally resolve the LMC. We report on measurements of the γ-ray emission from the LMC...
متن کاملDiffuse Cosmic Rays Shining in the Galactic Center: A Novel Interpretation of H.E.S.S. and Fermi-LAT γ-Ray Data.
We present a novel interpretation of the γ-ray diffuse emission measured by Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. in the Galactic center (GC) region and the Galactic ridge (GR). In the first part we perform a data-driven analysis based on PASS8 Fermi-LAT data: We extend down to a few GeV the spectra measured by H.E.S.S. and infer the primary cosmic-ray (CR) radial distribution between 0.1 and 3 TeV. In the se...
متن کاملFermi observations of Cassiopeia and Cepheus: gamma-ray diffuse emission in the outer Galaxy
We have used measurements by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to study the interstellar gamma-ray emission in a region of the second Galactic quadrant, at 100◦ < l < 145◦ and −15◦ < b < 30. This region encompasses the prominent Gould-Belt clouds of Cassiopeia, Cepheus, and the Polaris flare, as well as large atomic and molecular complexes at larger distances in several spiral arms. The good...
